Naturally, the DOJ on behalf of the FTC brought a lawsuit against the company for violating online privacy laws for children, becoming the first such case involving Internet-connected toys. Vtech has agreed to pay a $650,000 fine as part of a\u00a0settlement\u00a0with the FTC.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"popup_BIG_DATA\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\"#popup_BIG_DATA_modal\" href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/button_banner-Big_Data_Report.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-notMobileReferredByFbTw\">\n<div class=\"o-article_block pb-15 pb-5@m- mt-n35 mt-n25@m mt-n15@s\">\n<div class=\"grid@tl+\">\n<div class=\"full-width@tp- grid@tl+__cell col-8-of-12@tl+\">\n<div class=\"article-text c-gray-1 no-review\">\n<p>Back in 2015, a hacker had broken in to Vtech's systems and taken data from users who had registered accounts on the company's &#8216;Learning Lodge' app store. The DOJ complaint filed on behalf of the FTC that Vtech failed to directly notify product owners (i.e. parents) that they were storing data from users (i.e. children), nor collect the former's consent to do so. Thus, the company violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
