{"id":5780,"date":"2017-12-13T01:55:23","date_gmt":"2017-12-13T01:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ftcguardian.com\/articles\/?p=5780"},"modified":"2017-12-13T01:55:23","modified_gmt":"2017-12-13T01:55:23","slug":"ftc-deceptive-advertising-complaint-settled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ftcguardian.com\/articles\/ftc-deceptive-advertising-complaint-settled\/","title":{"rendered":"FTC Deceptive Advertising Complaint Settled"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"entry-title\">FTC Deceptive Advertising Complaint Settled<\/h1>\n<div class=\"td-module-meta-info\">\n<div class=\"td-post-author-name\">\n<p class=\"td-author-by\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/wholefoodsmagazine.com\/news\/main-news\/ftc-deceptive-advertising-complaint-settled\/\">WholeFoods Magazine Staff<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a network of online marketers and the three people behind it have agreed to settle charges they sold more than 40 weight-loss, muscle-building, and wrinkle-reduction products to consumers using unsubstantiated health claims, fake magazine and news sites, bogus celebrity endorsements and phony consumer testimonials.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"popup_7TLM_Cheat_Sheet\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\"#popup_7TLM_Cheat_Sheet_modal\" href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/images\/button_banner-7TLM_Cheat_Sheet.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The FTC also alleges the defendants used deceptive offers of \u201cfree\u201d and \u201crisk-free\u201d trials, and automatically enrolled consumers without their consent in negative option auto-ship programs with additional monthly charges.<\/p>\n<p>The court order settling the charges imposes a judgment of $179 million, which is the amount FTC alleges consumers nationwide paid the defendants over a period of more than five years.
