It a crucial step towards regulating and monitoring how much quantity of consumer data ISPs can collect

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reportedly announced that it will be investigating the privacy practices of various internet service providers by requesting big companies like Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T to provide non-public information explaining how they manage consumer data.

Apparently, it is one of the crucial steps towards regulating and monitoring about how much quantity of consumer data ISPs can collect and how extensively that data can be shared.

According to an FTC press release, it is conducting this study for better understanding of Internet service providers’ privacy practices in view of the advancement of telecommunication companies into vertically integrated platforms which provide content supported by advertising.

Your car is watching you. Who owns the data?

By Gopal Ratnam

If you’re driving a late model car or truck, chances are that the vehicle is mostly computers on wheels, collecting and wirelessly transmitting vast quantities of data to the car manufacturer not just on vehicle performance but personal information, too, such as your weight, the restaurants you visit, your music tastes and places you go.

A car can generate about 25 gigabytes of data every hour and as much as 4,000 gigabytes a day, according to some estimates. The data trove in the hands of car makers could be worth as much as $750 billion by 2030, the consulting firm McKinsey has estimated. But consumer groups, aftermarket repair shops and privacy advocates say the data belongs to the car’s owners and the information should be subject to data privacy laws.

Yet Congress has yet to pass comprehensive federal data privacy legislation. And although Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has said he would like to see federal privacy legislation passed by the end of the year, it is unclear if that goal can be met.

Consumers are right to be concerned that, unknown to them, data collected by car companies could be shared with law enforcement agencies, just as online ancestry registries have shared DNA information with investigators, said Sally Greenberg, executive director of the National Consumers League. Drivers who connect their smartphones and other devices via Bluetooth to their cars could be sharing their entertainment and eating habits as well as their entire contacts list with the car’s manufacturer, or with a rental car company, Greenberg said.

In a lawsuit filed in New York's Southern District, Sprint says it is taking the action as a result of “AT&T’s false advertising and deceptive acts” around 5G E.

In a statement provided to USA TODAY, Sprint says that “AT&T is deliberately deceiving consumers into believing that their existing 4G LTE network operates on a coveted and highly anticipated 5G network.”

For the first time, EU authorities have announced plans to recall a product from the European market because of a data privacy issue.

The product is Safe-KID-One, a children's smartwatch produced by German electronics vendor ENOX.

According to the company's website, the watch comes with a trove of features, such as a built-in GPS tracker, built-in microphone and speaker, a calling and SMS text function, and a companion Android mobile app that parents can use to keep track and contact their children.

By Shara Tibken

The US Federal Trade Commission has accused Qualcomm of operating a monopoly in wireless chips, forcing customers like Apple to work with it exclusively and charging excessive licensing fees for its technology.

Qualcomm is the world's biggest provider of mobile chips, and it created technology that's essential for connecting phones to cellular networks. The company derives a significant portion of its revenue from licensing those inventions to hundreds of device makers, with the fee based on the value of the phone, not the components.

Qualcomm has denied the allegations and says the FTC doesn't have evidence of any anticompetitive behavior against rival chipmakers.

The two sides have said they've been working on a settlement, but the judge in the case wouldn't delay the trial.

Google has been fined nearly $57 million by French regulators for violating Europe's tough new data privacy rules, marking the first major penalty brought against a U.S. technology giant since the regionwide regulations took effect last year.

France's top data privacy agency, known as the CNIL, said Monday that Google failed to fully disclose to users how their personal information is collected and what happens to it. Google also did not properly obtain users' consent for the purpose of showing them personalized ads, the watchdog agency said.

To French regulators, Google's business practices ran afoul of Europe's new General Data Protection Regulation. Implemented in 2018, the sweeping privacy rules, commonly referred to as GDPR, have set a global standard that has forced Google and its tech peers in Silicon Valley to rethink their data collection practices or risk sky-high fines.

The United States lacks a similar overarching federal consumer privacy law, a deficiency in the eyes of privacy rights advocates that has elevated Europe as the world's de facto privacy cop.

A coalition of more than 75 consumer groups is urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate Google for allegedly manipulating Android users into having their location tracked at all times.

The Trans Atlantic Consumer Dialogue argued that Google “nudges” mobile phone users with Android operating systems to turn on their location services.

“Location data and history can reveal in detail an individual’s lifestyle, daily routines, and interests,” the groups wrote. “Over time, the data can be used to infer highly sensitive information such as religious beliefs, political views, and sexual orientation.”

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Pledges to Investigate Video Game Loot Boxes

By Brian Crecente

FTC chairman Joseph Simons on Tuesday said he would investigate video game loot boxes to ensure that children are being protected and parents are educated on the matter.

The request comes about nine months after Hassan sent a letter to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board asking for the group to review the rating process as it relates to loot boxes, examine the marketing of loot boxes to children, and put together best practices for developers around the toxic form of microtransactions. The senator also asked the board to conduct a study that further delves into the reach and impact of loot boxes in games. At the time, she said if they didn’t take sufficient action she would ask the FTC to get involved.

“Loot boxes are now endemic in the video game industry and are present in everything from casual smartphone games to the newest, high-budget video game releases. Loot boxes will represent a $50 billion industry by the year 2022, according to the latest research estimates. Children may be particularly susceptible to engaging with these in-game purchases, which are often considered integral components of video games. Just this month Great Britain’s gambling commission released a report finding that 30% of children have used loot boxes in video games. The report further found that this exposure may correlate with a rise of young problem gamblers in the United Kingdom. Belgium, Netherlands, and Japan have moved to regulate the use of loot boxes in video games given this close link to gambling.

Privacy groups blast US FTC as digital ad industry ‘lapdog’

By David Mclaughlin

Leading privacy watchdog groups lashed out at the US Federal Trade Commission for siding with the advertising industry as part of an initiative to update consumer-data protections.

The organizations, which include the Consumer Federation of America and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told FTC Chairman Joe Simons in a letter Nov 26 that the agency relied on a “self-serving study” by the ad industry to warn against a policy in which consumers are opted out of online advertising by default.

“They’re incapable of standing up for the public and taking on these powerful interests,” he said. “We need a real watchdog, not a lapdog.”

“For example, if consumers were opted out of online advertisements by default (with the choice of opting in), the likely result would include the loss of advertising-funded online content,” the FTC said.

By Tim Sandle

The Internet of Things continues to grow at a rapid pace. Most applications deploy existing technology and combines this by connecting devices together so that business operations can be improved and so that costs can be lowered. Many IoT applications are concerned with collecting data, allowing devices to work in synchronicity and for boosting customer engagement.

The new standard has been written to provide a common framework that designers and developers can use and for the resultant systems to be “trustworthy”. Trust refers to creating IoT applications that are reliable, safe, secure, respect privacy and can better cope with disruptions like natural disasters and attacks.
