StarKist doesn’t point out it pays AHA for logo on label

A consumer watchdog is weighing a probe into StarKist Tuna and its relationship with the American Heart Association, concerned that the pair have been misleading consumers for years.

The beef is that cans of StarKist tuna don’t disclose on their labels that the manufacturer has paid money to the AHA for the right to display the group’s “heart check” certification.

AHA certification does place limits on fat, salt and sugar for canned foods, among other criteria. But the AHA also quietly charges StarKist — and scores of other companies — an annual fee for the use of its mark, says TINA executive director Bonnie Patten.
